Meanwhile, another alderman was seeking legal clarification from the city s corporation counsel regarding Williams re-submission.
The ordinance is on Tuesday s committee of the whole agenda and will likely get moved to the debate agenda for March 16.
Williams, the president of the board of directors for the Faith Coalition for the Common Good, was voted down 6-3. Under emergency passage, Williams needed seven yes votes.
Langfelder put forward Williams to succeed Sen. Doris Turner, D-Springfield, who was appointed to fill the seat of former Sen. Andy Manar, D-Bunker Hill, in the 48th Senate District of the Illinois General Assembly. Turner had served in Ward 3 since 2011.
Unfortunately, one of those similarities is growing gun violence â some of which authorities say is connected.
âYoung people are on a death march,â the Rev. Courtney Carson said about the current climate of both cities. âHow are we going to be actively involved in bettering the lives of those young people together.â
Carson made statement Friday during a panel discussion, Decatur and Springfield City 2 City Town Hall Meeting, he hosted with Lisa Badger, a business agent for Teamster Local 916 and a Springfield Park District Board trustee.
âWe said âletâs pull together everybody we know,â Badger said. âThis isnât a Decatur problem. This isnât a Springfield problem. Weâre neighbors. Letâs look it as one community and bring everybody together to have a conversation.â

The Feb. 25 event was hosted by the Faith Coalition for the Common Good and League of Women Voters. Two of seven seats will be up for grabs during the April 6 election. Judith Johnson will not run to retain her seat in Subdistrict 6, and there are three candidates to fill the spot. Subdistrict 5 will have two candidates on the ballot, including an incumbent. Anthony Mares, the current board president, is running unopposed in Subdistrict 1. Michael Zimmers is also running unopposed in Subdistrict 4.
City of Springfield
The Springfield City Council rejected the mayor’s nominee to fill the Ward 3 vacancy on the council, despite support from faith and community leaders.
Some council members were concerned Roy Williams, Jr., the mayor’s choice, declined to say if he’d run for election in two years. Williams said he wanted to focus on the job for the first year before deciding on whether to run for a full term in 2023.
“I want to spend this time dealing with the violence and cleaning up Ward 3,” he said Tuesday night. Williams is president of the Faith Coalition for the Common Good and head of the Ernie Bankhead neighborhood association.
