As the National Museum of African American Music opens its doors, journalists from the USA TODAY Network explore the stories, places and people who helped make music what it is today in our expansive series, Hallowed Sound.
From its roots as a country and western label based in a garage in Brunswick, Tennessee, to its eventual evolution into a South Memphis soul music powerhouse, Stax Records released some 800 singles and 300-plus LPs during its historic run from 1957 to 1976. Opinion: Our mask-wearing road trip across a battered America CNN 2/20/2021 Opinion by Sandy Tolan © Courtesy Sandy Tolan and Andrea Portes Sandy Tolan, his wife Andrea Portes, their son Wyatt and dog Rascal enjoy their first morning back home after their road trip.
In January, as Covid cases spiked in California, refrigerated morgue trucks rolled into Los Angeles, ICUs overflowed, oxygen supplies depleted and full ambulances waited in lines for hours, my wife, Andrea, and I faced a dilemma. The two of us had spent Christmas in Tucson, and planned to drive home to Los Angeles, but our 11-year-old son was in Florida with his biological dad. Andrea had a plane ticket to bring Wyatt back. But flying, especially out of Los Angeles International Airport, seemed too risky. Better to stay at super-clean Airbnbs, order contactless food, and drive across the country to Miami.

Godzilla Vs. Kong hasnât even come out yet, and Iâm already talking about what I want to see in the future for the series. This is why we canât have nice things! In all seriousness, I feel like no matter who wins this grudge match, Godzilla will be just fine. Because whether the MonsterVerse continues or not, Toho will likely do something with the King of the Monsters, so we wonât be losing Godzilla anytime soon. Iâm actually much more concerned about King Kong, who I feel might go into hibernation again if the MonsterVerse doesnât succeed.
