Taipei, May 11 (CNA) Taiwan has entered the community transmission stage of COVID-19 following the emergence of six domestic cases of the disease that have unknown sources of infection, Health and Welfare Minister Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) said Tuesday.
Five of the six cases are linked to the Galaxy Baccarat, an arcade in the eastern county of Yilan, and consist of four female employees at the arcade aged from the late teens to their 40s, and a regular customer, a man in his 30s, Chen said.
The cluster was discovered after one of the employees visited a hospital on May 9 because she had chills, fever and a cough. She was tested that day, and her result came back positive a day later, Chen said.

Taipei, May 11 (CNA) A travel bubble arrangement between Taiwan and its Pacific diplomatic ally Palau will remain in place, even though the Taiwanese carrier that operates flights destined for Palau is combating a pilot shortage caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Deputy Transportation Minister Chi Wen-jong (祈文中) said Tuesday.
The Taiwan-Palau travel bubble program officially began on April 1, allowing residents of the two countries to travel largely quarantine-free, provided they follow certain protocols, such as only traveling in groups.
China Airlines (CAL), one of Taiwan s largest carriers, which operates flights under the travel bubble program, has arranged sufficient manpower to operate the travel bubble route, Chi said.

Taipei, May 11 (CNA) Inventories of surgical face masks in Taiwan remain sufficient to meet demand at a time when the country is seeing rising concerns over an increase in domestically transmitted COVID-19 cases, the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) said Tuesday.
On its Facebook page, the MOEA said the current face mask inventory tops 800 million units, with daily production hitting 18.30 million units on average and a maximum daily capacity of 40 million units.
Judging from the figures, the MOEA said, Taiwan has sufficient supplies to cope with the rising number of indigenous COVID-19 cases.
The MOEA s assurance came after Health and Welfare Minister Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) said earlier in the day that Taiwan has entered a community COVID-19 transmission stage after seven new domestic cases were reported, six of which were from unknown sources.
We Don’t Need to Wait on the UN to Expand Taiwan’s International Role
Liberal democracies can, and should, develop their own bilateral and multilateral exchanges with Taiwan, even while pushing for its inclusion in the WHO and other U.N. bodies.

The G-7 Foreign Ministers’ May 5 statement in support of Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Organization (WHO) is welcome but not sufficient. Liberal democracies can and should do more to undermine China’s efforts to isolate Taiwan. Moreover, given Beijing’s substantial influence within key international organizations they will need to be creative.

Taipei, May 5 (CNA) Some of the recently confirmed COVID-19 cases at the Taiwanese carrier China Airlines (CAL) and an airport hotel in Taoyuan are connected, but the source of the cluster infection remains unclear, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) said Wednesday.
The CECC made the link after carrying out genome sequencing of the viruses in cases connected to Novotel Taipei Taoyuan International Airport Hotel and CAL, one of Taiwan s major airlines, said CECC official Lo Yi-chun (羅一鈞).
Over the past two weeks, 11 CAL cargo pilots, a flight attendant, and relatives of the pilots have tested positive for COVID-19.
