Coronavirus in Oregon: 1,173 new cases and 41 deaths as contagious variant’s discovery alarms health officials

The Oregon Health Authority on Saturday announced 1,173 confirmed and presumptive COVID-19 cases and 41 fatalities as the bleak reality from a fall and winter surge leaves a growing number of Oregonians dead.
Saturday marked the third time in a week that Oregon reported at least 40 deaths, with an average of 28 fatalities a day reported over that span. More Oregonians with COVID-19 died in December than in the first six months of the pandemic combined.
Late Saturday evening, The Oregon Health Authority announced that the state is just one death away from reaching 1,800 total deaths from the coronavirus since the beginning of the pandemic.

There were 41 new COVID-19 related deaths reported in Oregon Wednesday, raising the state’s death toll to 1,708.
Oregon Health Authority reported 1,346 new confirmed and presumptive cases of COVID-19 bringing the state total to 129,109.
The number of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 across Oregon is 434, which is 31 more than Tuesday. There are 103 COVID-19 patients in intensive care unit (ICU) beds, which is 10 more than Tuesday.
14,722 new doses of COVID-19 vaccinations were added to the state immunization registry. Of this total, 9,071 vaccine doses were administered on Jan. 12 and 5,651 were administered on previous days but were entered into the vaccine registry on Jan. 12.
