JAMES FREDERICK DEROUIN A little man with a big heart. In his high school class of 100 (50 being boys) eleven of them were named James. To lessen confusion they decided to call each other by their middle names. That is how Jim/Fred got to be known as Jim to some people while others only knew him as Fred. Jim/Fred was the original owner of the Only Shoe Repair on North Broadway, known for its excellent workmanship and the tree out front with brightly painted shoes hanging from the branches. He took pride in his work and won several national shoe repair competitions.

Churches look forward to welcoming more when capacity limits rise

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, with the pews replaced by chairs for distancing. (Dominick Lucyk/980 CJME) After more than a year of online services and mostly empty pews due to COVID-19 health measures, a significant number of people soon will be allowed back to church. The first step of Saskatchewan’s Re-Opening Roadmap will increase capacity at places of worship to 150 people or a third of the building’s capacity, whichever is less. Step One is scheduled to begin May 30. Rev. Jim Chimirri-Russell, the pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Regina, has been doing his best throughout the pandemic, but he’s still looking forward to standing up and speaking to a more normal-sized flock.

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Shalimar celebrates 65th anniversary

SHALIMAR As Bea Daily prepares a PowerPoint for Good Shepherd Lutheran Church’s 65th anniversary same as she did for the Shalimar church’s 50th and 60th anniversaries she can’t help but feel overcome with emotion. The church historian compares archiving and sharing her church’s past to genealogy. They’re a family, she said. “It s important to have that history there for future generations,” Daily said. “It s amazing how people will say, ‘I m so glad that you had that in there,’ and ‘You had so and so s face in there,’ and ‘That s such a great thing to be able to remember. If you hadn t had that in there, I would have forgotten about that.’ It s worthwhile.
