Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez says the first case of the COVID-19 Delta variant has been identified in the northern part of the Nation. The Delta variant is highly transmissible. However, health experts say COVID-19 vaccines are shown to be effective in preventing in severe illness from the variant. The World Health Organization yesterday recommended fully vaccinated people continue to wear face coverings indoors and social distance to stop the spread of the new variant, as well as others. Navajo Nation Council Votes To Reopen Businesses, Schools

Credit AP Last Friday’s vote repeals COVID-19 related legislations implemented at the beginning of the pandemic. In a statement today, the Navajo Nation Council says the legislation will grant Chapters authority to discuss non-COVID related matters, including budgets, authorizations and approvals. An original version of the measure was vetoed earlier by Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez because of certain language used in the draft, which the new legislation rescinds. Despite the unanimous vote, several council members expressed concerns over the health and safety of the Chapters they represent. Under the legislation, Chapters still have the option to conduct meetings virtually, in-person, or with a hybrid version.

Tribal lawmakers recently approved a resolution to establish criminal penalties for vicious dog attacks. But Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez vetoed the resolution, saying it didn t go far enough and more input is needed. The family of Lyssa Rose Upshaw believes that dogs killed the 13-year-old while she was on a walk near their home in Fort Defiance, Arizona. The family say Upshaw was sweet and quiet, and had been looking forward to her freshman year in high school.
