Mayor s chief of staff: Mask mandate still applies in some parts of government center, some city workers will prefer to wear masks

The public also has been required for months to wear a mask when entering the building. Jacobs followed Gov. Bill Lee s lead Tuesday to discontinue restrictions in place for the vast majority of Tennessee counties. Lee also said major metro counties such as Knox should consider ending their restrictions by May 28. Jacobs chose to act sooner. The Mayor s Office said Wednesday that Jacobs and Van de Vate met with (Health Department Director Dr. Martha Buchanan) and spoke a number of times with her about the mask mandate before a decision and subsequent announcement was made. The mayor also checked with the law department, according to the Mayor s Office, and it determined the decision to lift the mandate rests with the mayor.

Tennessee House passes bill to allow use of state and local taxes on Knoxville stadium project

A bill meant to help pay for a new $65 million baseball stadium in downtown Knoxville was passed in the Tennessee House of Representatives Tuesday. The bill would allow the local government to capture and use state and local sales tax collected in the area around the proposed stadium. Officials said that the money taken from sales tax could help cover up to 30% of the construction costs. State Senator Becky Duncan Massey introduced the legislation along with Representative Jason Zachary. Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs testified to support the legislation and said that it must pass for the project to move forward. He said that stadium would create more than 3,000 jobs and would not add a tax burden on residents.

Gov Bill Lee pitches $13 5 million for Smokies stadium in Old City

Knoxvillle Mayor Indya Kincannon and Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs jointly announced the appointments of seven people to the newly formed Sports Authority that would oversee the repayment of debt incurred in the construction of a proposed Tennessee Smokies baseball stadium in Knoxville s Old City. The announcement advances the partnership of the city and county in the venture, and comes on the heels of a compromise proposed by Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee, lawmakers and local leaders that would provide a $13.5 million state grant to avoid having to expand the sales tax district that will collect money to pay for the stadium s construction.

One dead, one injured in shooting at Austin-East High School

Monday afternoon, a student at Austin-East High School accused of shooting a police officer was reported dead. Around 3:15 p.m., Knoxville Police Department responded to a report of a student armed with a gun at Austin-East. Officers located the student inside a restroom. After the student refused to come out, officers entered the restroom, which resulted in the student firing multiple shots. One officer was injured. Officials say officers returned fire, though it has not been confirmed if any of the officers’ fire struck the student. The injured officer was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center with a leg injury, was listed in serious condition and entered surgery. Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon reportedly met with the officer before his surgery, noting that he was in good spirits.
