KNOXVILLE, Tenn The housing market is booming in Knoxville as businesses expand and more people move to the area.
The Knoxville Area Association of Realtors reported record-high home sales and record low inventory in 2020.
Researchers said home prices are likely to remain high and rising throughout 2021 but not as quickly as the previous year. Money is cheap to borrow right now so demand is up, supply is way low and you have this weird connection between those two that has really sparked a booming housing market in a recession which is very atypical, KAAR Governmental Affairs & Policy Director Hancen Sale said.

One of Maryvilleâs local staples is closing its doors, but perhaps not for long.
Richy Kreme Do-Nuts, 2601 E. Broadway Ave., Maryville, is closing for at least a month. Employee Brandy Barner told The Daily Times on Thursday the store was closing indefinitely unless someone buys it, but according to Realtor Charles Baine and a post by the shopâs Instagram account, plans already are in motion for its future.
The Instagram post, made Dec. 30, states Richy Kreme would close just for January and would reopen Feb. 1. That time frame was corroborated by Baine, who is handling the businessâs sale and said it is already under contract to transfer to a new owner.
Surge in neighborhood’s popularity continues as sense of community draws new residents
Native Knoxvillian Gary Koontz has been ordering the same meal at Rankin Restaurant on North Central Street since the early 1960s. He remembers well growing up in North Knoxville’s Oakwood-Lincoln Park neighborhood, attending Christenberry Junior High and Fulton High School. And he remembers eating at the diner.
Gary, a realtor with Realty Executives, still drops in from time to time at Rankin’s, a North Knoxville staple since 1953. On Rankin’s Facebook page the diner is described as “the oldest operating restaurant in Knoxville.” The restaurant is not far from The Original Freezo, another retro restaurant in the neighborhood. It opened in 1942 and is the home of a great swirled soft-serve cone.
