WASHINGTON, D.C. Steps are in place to protect the health and safety of adopted wild horses and burros through the U.S.
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced on Wednesday the Wild Horse and Burro Adoption Incentive Program, which will certify the individual who plans on adopting the animals will not knowingly sell or transfer the horses or burros for slaughter or processing into commercial products.
“We are committed to the health and safety of adopted wild horses and burros,” said Nada Wolff Culver, BLM Deputy Director for Programs. “While the vast majority of adopters already adhere to our requirements to provide a good and caring home, the BLM is now taking additional steps to secure the health and safety of adopted animals. U.S. officials who are trying to adopt out wild horses captured on public land say they are tightening protections to guard against the illegal resale of the animals for slaughter, but advocates say the government needs to do more, including ending incentive payments for adoptions.
