Decade of Difference: Loretta Lynn (Part 2 of 3)

Loretta Lynn’s remarkable career had already produced more than twenty top 10 country songs over her first decade. In 1972 she was named the Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year, the first time a female artist won the award. Her next album was named Entertainer of the Year in recognition of the award. Only one single was released from the album and it reached number one despite its controversial subject matter. Rated X focuses on double standards applied to divorced women and it was banned from airplay at many stations. Lynn had another song banned in 1975 with The Pill. The song dealt with birth control and despite the ban, became her highest charting pop song.
