February 05, 2021 × Announcement comes ahead of Assembly polls in May; loans availed by 16.43 lakh farmers from co-op banks   In a big relief to the farmers in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Friday announced the waiver of crop loans worth ₹12,110 crore availed by 16.43 lakh farmers through cooperative banks. Palaniswami said that the farmers in the State were badly affected due to the Covid-19 pandemic, two cyclones and unseasonal rains. They need help, he said in the Assembly. The announcement comes ahead of the Assembly polls due in the State in May. The waiver of farm loans is set to become a major election issue. In January, DMK President MK Stalin had promised waiver of farm and jewel loans if his party was elected to power.

In 2016, convict AG Periavalan, had approached the Supreme Court, seeking release from jail. New Delhi: Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit will take a decision on the release of seven people convicted for the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi within three to four days , Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the Supreme Court today. The court, which is hearing a petition regarding the release of the convicts, had earlier expressed unhappiness over the Governor s tardiness on the issue. In 2018, the Tamil Nadu government had recommended the premature release of all the seven convicts in the 1991 assassination case. The cabinet s decision, however, needed a sign-off from the Governor, with whom the matter has been pending since.
