Time for action on National Lottery age limit

The government’s decision to raise the minimum age for playing the National Lottery will hopefully draw a line under an issue that brought lots of bad press to the sector for very little financial gain. Joanne Christie reports.
So far, the only concrete change to come out of the much-hyped forthcoming overhaul of British gambling laws is the raising of the age at which players can play the National Lottery from 16 to 18.
But rather than being a blow to incumbent Camelot and its competitors in the race for the fourth National Lottery tender, and unlike some of the decisions expected to result from the review, the news probably came as a relief.

Illuminating shoelaces increase safety for joggers and cyclists
The innovative shoelaces contain light emitting diodes the size of a flea and are activated by the wearer tapping their shoes together.

Textiles experts at Nottingham Trent University have designed shoelaces that light up and flash to improve safety at night for joggers and cyclists. Created by researchers in the Advanced Textiles Research Group (ATRG) in collaboration with leading science and engineering company QinetiQ, the laces are also intended as a fashion accessory.
The braided shoelaces contain light emitting diodes (LEDs) ‘the size of a flea’ and are switched on or off by the wearer tapping their shoes together, ATRG says. As the LEDs are encapsulated in a waterproof resin, the laces are fully washable and wearable so they can be worn and used like any other pair of laces, the group adds.
Golden delicious: Choose the right turkey and cook it well with Xanthe’s help

What’s on the table for Christmas this year? For most of us it looks like it will be turkey, even if family gatherings are likely to be smaller than usual. Turkey suppliers such as Copas and KellyBronze are reporting healthy sales – no doubt boosted by some of the four million-plus Britons who would usually be abroad on Dec 25, and will now be staying at home instead.
But having plumped for the festive bird, which turkey will it be?
Not so long ago, a turkey was a bog-standard bird, probably a broad- breasted white, the kind favoured by large-scale turkey farmers and supermarkets. Extremely fast-growing, it offers great value, and mild (some say bland) flavour with a very high ratio of popular breast meat to leg.
