The telescopes coming soon that could help us finally find life beyond planet Earth

A number of major telescopes and observatories are coming online this decade Many will aim to search for signs for exoplanets and indications of alien life They range from radio telescopes to observatories on Earth and in space The James Webb Space Telescope will orbit the Sun and be the world s largest optical and near infrared telescope when it comes online in 2025

They include orbital observatories like the James Webb space telescope and Earth-based systems like the massive Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) in Chile.   The goal of the next generation of observatories is to explore further back into the earliest years of the universe and hunt for signs of life on exoplanets. They range from massive radio antennae, through large optical telescopes, to space-based observatories further and further away from the glare of the Earth.

Bad Astronomy | Black holes will be found by Roman Space Telescope

Artwork showing the Nancy Roman Space Telescope, formerly the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope. Credit: NASA This telescope is in the early stages now, with engineering models being built to test out the design. Scheduled for launch in the mid-2020s (which seems aspirational, but shouldn t be too long after that) and costing about $4 billion (including the first five years of mission costs), it s based on what NASA calls legacy hardware and concepts, ideas and tech developed for previous missions that have been shown to work. Roman is very similar to the Hubble Space Telescope: It will sport a 2.4-meter primary mirror, the same size as Hubble s. But it will have a far, far wider field of view, meaning it will see larger chunks of the sky. How much bigger? In a single image it will see
