A California appeals court has handed a tactical setback to the model train club that for more than three years has battled the Napa Valley Expo to keep its elaborate miniature railroad exhibition at the downtown fairground, the groupâs home base for more than half a century.
Judge Mark B. Simons of the 1st District Court of Appeal ruled last month that the Napa Valley Model Railroad Historical Society can no longer claim to be staving off eviction by the state-operated Expo, despite the fair authorityâs termination of the groupâs lease at the end of 2017.
In a Jan. 20 decision, Simons ruled that an abortive reconciliation in July 2018 â when the model train society paid one monthâs rent to the Expo before refusing further payments at a much higher rate than before â renders meaningless its push to reverse the fairgroundâs eviction of the club the year before.
Today, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, thatâs completely changed.
To reduce the number of people in county courtrooms, Zoom access has been added to every Napa courtroom, enabling those involved in cases to appear remotely, whether one or 1,000 miles away.
It also led to something else.

Anyone with a smartphone or laptop can now log in via Zoom and watch real court proceedings in real time. Think of it as Napaâs own version of âCourt TV.â
âThe challenges of the pandemic were unprecedented,â said Bob Fleshman, CEO of the Superior Court of Napa County. âIt came down to access to justice,â he said. âIf we didnât pivot to a digital environment with remote capabilities, we wouldnât be able to serve the community.â
Gallo Vineyards has sued Long Meadow Ranch Wine Estates over the St. Helena-based producerâs alleged inability to fulfill its end of a two-year grape contract, according to a complaint filed at the end of January in Napa County Superior Court.
This lawsuit marks the second time Gallo Vineyards, a subsidiary of the worldâs largest winery E & J Gallo Winery, has taken legal action against Long Meadow Ranch Wine Estates. It previously sued the winery in September, Wine Business reported, over non-payment for grapes harvested and delivered in 2019. That lawsuit was âdismissed over a technicality,â according to Wine Business.
