The board of health will consider putting together a sub-committee to recruit a new acting medical officer of health for Haldimand-Norfolk.
In a report to the board of health, which will meet on Tuesday, Heidy Van Dyk, acting general manager of health and social services, recommends the committee be made up of four Norfolk County councillors and three Haldimand County councillors.

Dr. Shanker Nesathurai, who has been Haldimand-Norfolk’s medical officer of health for almost three years, is leaving the post as of May 21. His departure was announced in March.

The role and responsibilities of medical officers of health is the subject of increasingly intense discussion at Queen’s Park.
Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Toby Barrett said the COVID-19 pandemic has revealed that the powers vested in medical officers are not always compatible with the expectations of citizens.

Friday, Barrett said there is increasing concern among members of the Ford government that Ontarians’ expectations for their democracy have been sidelined while medical officials increasingly flex their muscles according to powers vested in them by the Health Protection and Promotion Act, the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act, and the Re-Opening Ontario Act.
