NORFOLK, Va. - A Hampton man was caught trying to bring a loaded handgun through airport security at Norfolk International Airport over the weekend.
After Transportation Security Administration officers detected the .45 caliber handgun with eight bullets on Sunday, they alerted Norfolk Airport Authority Police, who confiscated the weapon and arrested the man on weapons charges.
The case was forwarded to the Norfolk Commonwealth s Attorney for possible criminal prosecution, and the man also faces a stiff federal financial civil penalty.

NORFOLK, Va. - Transportation Security Administration officers at Norfolk International Airport found an unloaded .40 caliber handgun at a checkpoint.
Norfolk Airport Authority Police confiscated the weapon from the Camden, New Jersey man, and cited him on weapons charges. The case was forwarded to the Norfolk Commonwealthâs Attorney for possible criminal prosecution. Additionally, the man faces a federal financial civil penalty for carrying a gun to a TSA checkpoint.
Civil penalties for bringing a handgun into a checkpoint can reach thousands of dollars depending on the circumstances. This applies whether the passenger has a concealed gun carry permit or not.

NORFOLK, Va. Transportation Security Administration officers stopped a Virginia man with a loaded gun from getting through the checkpoint at Norfolk International Airport on Tuesday.
The 9mm handgun was loaded with 15 bullets including one in the chamber.
TSA said this was the third gun caught at the checkpoint in just the first seven weeks of 2021.
According to Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein, a TSA officer spotted the gun at the checkpoint X-ray machine.

NORFOLK, Va.âTransportation Security Administration officers at Norfolk International Airport stopped a gun from getting through the checkpoint Saturday, Dec. 26.
The 9mm handgun, loaded with 14 bullets, and an additional loose bullet was found in the travelerâs carry-on bag, according to a news release.
Norfolk Airport Authority Police were alerted immediately after the contents of bag were displayed on the x-ray machine. Officers confiscated the weapon and cited the Virginia Beach resident on a weapons charge.
