HospiceCare North Northumberland was nominated as its charity of the year in 2020 with the aim of raising £25,000 to celebrate the hospice’s 25th anniversary.
Although last year was tough for many due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Estates’ staff were determined to go the extra mile in an attempt to reach their target and held several fundraising events.
One saw eight departments taking part in the Twenty-five Alive challenge event pitting their wits against each other to raise as much as possible from an initial £25 investment.
Vanessa Proudlock, head of community engagement for Northumberland Estates, is pictured handing over a cheque for £24,516.00 to Maxine Shell, HospiceCare’s family support co-ordinator and nursing assistant, following a year of fundraising for the Hospice.

Merrington Lane Industrial Park. Spennymoor. County Durham. AN ailing industrial site in County Durham has benefited from a multi-million pound investment which has helped boost employment in the locality. The 17-acre Merrington Lane Industrial Estate, near Spennymoor, was in poor repair and around 80 per cent vacant property when developers Northumberland Estates acquired it in summer, 2019. A refurbishment of the site, formerly owned by electrical giants Electrolux, which included improved infrastructure and upgraded facilities has reversed this position. Northumberland Estates exceeded its own expectations by attracting new tenants and securing 100 per cent occupancy within 12 months, despite the Covid-19 pandemic. Asset manager at Northumberland Estates, Michael O’Driscoll, said: “When we purchased Merrington Land Industrial Estate at auction we felt that with the right investment the voids could be filled quickly.
Whittonstall Christine Jewitt It has been an interesting few weeks in Whittonstall as the snow and wind arrived without mercy this month. It’s been some time since we experienced such a volume of the dreaded white stuff and having landed in great powdery quantities the swirling winds took no prisoners and simply gathered up the snow to create amazing drifts, re-blocking many of the minor roads which had only recently been ploughed clear. Trees fell and traffic was halted with only the brave venturing out for a few days. Happily, the snow is gone and better temperatures are coming with a hint of spring on the way.
