■First place winner in the Northampton Jaycees Christmas Lighting contest was Miss Helen Chmyzinski, whose home is at 227 Prospect St. Co-chairmen of the contest are Robert Cahillane and David Neal. Miss Chmyzinski will receive a $25 savings bond.
■Julie and David Eisenhower, formerly of Northampton, spent Christmas at the White House. Everyone received “nice presents, but nothing spectacular,” said Julie. Her parents, President and Mrs. Richard Nixon, gave her a bright Chinese red pants suit with a wide zipper on the hip length over-blouse.

■Starting with the New Year, every baby born to a city family will get the present that can save lives: a smoke detector. Fire Chief Lawrence J. Jones will inaugurate the Northampton program by giving a decorative fire dog smoke detector to the first baby born to a city family.

A beloved mentor once advised me to confront challenges with “it’s only a problem” something simply to be puzzled out and attended to. I think of this wisdom whenever I’m reminded that I can’t experience the satisfaction of resolving a problem without the problem itself.
Today at the Northampton Survival Center, a “perfect storm” of circumstances loomed: a large number of volunteers out on quarantine unavailable to bag up groceries, the continuing high volume of client need during this pandemic year, and the literal storm of snow predicted overnight. A stretched-thin crew of staff began the day addressing the tactical issues moving turkeys out and hams into the refrigerators, receiving deliveries of produce and bread, finding a traffic controller to help clients navigate the narrow driveway. NORTHAMPTON – Amalia FourHawks hadn’t seen her 85-year-old husband Leonard FourHawks for more than nine months since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March. Speaking through a plexiglass window at the VA Medical Center in Leeds just a few weeks ago, the two had a lot of catching up to do despite daily phone calls.
