Norman man charged with assault, robbery, burglary

Feb 3, 2021 A Norman man has been charged with five felonies, including one count each of first-degree burglary and robbery by force or fear, and three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon. Domanic Jermaine Turner, 41, was charged Jan. 4 in Cleveland County District Court. According to a court affidavit, a Norman Police officer reported around 9:12 p.m. Jan. 3 to Riverbend Apartments and spoke with three women, one of whom had multiple stab wounds to her leg and torso. One woman said Turner broke her apartment window at Ashton Place Apartments. The women fled together in a vehicle, but Turner followed and hit the back of the car. They stopped at Riverbend Apartments, where Turner hit the car again and blocked the driver from exiting.

OU graduate seeks to make Norman diversity hub, mend political divides in new city role

Twenty years ago, OU alumna Cinthya Allen drove past the “Welcome to Norman” sign on Flood Avenue for the first time as a resident. For Allen, the sign symbolizes inclusivity — a trait she believes defines her community. Norman’s nuanced history with diversity is apparent in its history as a ‘sundown town’ — which city councilors officially apologized for in 2020. A town that once excluded Black people from its residence now recognizes a Hispanic woman — and native of Chihuahua, Mexico — in a leadership position.  In its most recent meeting, the Norman City Council introduced Allen as Norman’s first chief diversity and equity officer — a position established in parallel to the City of Oklahoma City — charging her with molding Norman into the “inclusive city that we say we are,” she said.

Good news 2020: IMMY Labs helps support statewide testing efforts

Shown is IMMY, a Norman diagnostic test manufacturer. Provided Provided Editor’s note: This story is the first of three this week that will highlight good news or deeds in Norman in 2020. Norman-based company IMMY Labs came to the state’s aid when it needed help most this year, providing free COVID-19 tests and lab work throughout Oklahoma. IMMY Labs manufactures, markets and distributes diagnostic tests for infectious diseases, but this year the company started working with the Oklahoma State Department of Health to conduct and process COVID-19 tests. At one of its 150 locations across the state IMMY can now conduct around 1,600 tests in a single day.
