COVID-19 and lung cancer have a common pathway, say researchers
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a transmissible viral disease caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the pathogen responsible for the ongoing global pandemic. The virus was first detected in Wuhan, China, at the end of 2019 and to date has caused over 109 million infections worldwide.
With over 2.4 million deaths, this virus can cause severe disease in certain high-risk groups such as those with metabolic syndrome, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and an abnormally high body mass index (BMI). A new preprint on the
bioRxiv server describes the common features shared by this condition with lung cancer.
People ages 16-64 with qualifying medical conditions will be eligible for vaccination on March 1 and won t need documentation from a healthcare provider.
