Dowden warns live events industry of Covid-19 variant heightened vigilance | Burnham and Highbridge Weekly News

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden has warned the live events industry that the country is entering a “period of heightened vigilance” due to the spread of the Indian coronavirus variant. He said on Twitter the Government would continue to assess the spread of the variant in the coming weeks and update venues on their reopening. Limited audiences will be allowed back into theatres, music venues and sports stadiums from Monday as part of step 3 of the Government’s road map out of lockdown. The crucial road map date for theatres, music venues and sports has always been step 4, so I understand this is an anxious time as we assess the situation over the next couple of weeks. (1/3)

Drakeford: clubs and music venues towards the end of the reopening queue

Nightclubs and live music venues in Wales will not reopen until July at the earliest, First Minister Mark Drakeford has said. Mr Drakeford warned that as coronavirus “thrives” in places where people are unable to socially distance in indoor settings, clubs would come “towards the end of the reopening queue”. Asked if certain percentage of young people would need to receive a jab before clubs could open, Mr Drakeford told the PA news agency on Friday: “As of yesterday, 56% of people in their 30s had already received a first dose of a vaccine, and 37% of people in their 20s had received a first dose.

We head to The Brits 2021 as O2 Arena opens as part of UK Gov Events Research Programme

The last major awards show to take place in front of a live audience – the BRITs 2020, as it happens – took place 15 months ago. So, no wonder that, after over a year of Zoom calls and misery, some people had forgotten quite how these things work. With hugging still outlawed in the UK until Monday, guests arriving at the O2 Arena had to navigate a wave of uncertain fist bumps, awkward elbow taps and socially distanced air kissing. But once inside, the event itself seemed determined to wrap everybody – artists, 1,500 industry guests and 2,500 key workers – in the warmest possible embrace.

Mark Drakeford: clubs and music venues towards the end of the reopening queue

“We’re probably talking about the three-week cycle that will happen towards the end of June and into July before active consideration of those venues begins to happen.” Earlier this month around 5,000 people packed into Sefton Park in Liverpool for a pilot music festival as part of the UK Government’s Events Research Programme (ERP), which is being used by researchers to examine how to safely get live events running again. Social distancing rules will still be in place when indoor hospitality is able to reopen in Wales on Monday, but the restriction could be lifted over the coming months if Covid transmission continue to be suppressed, Mr Drakeford said.
