ISLAMABAD: The 10-party opposition’s Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) on Monday formally nominated Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) as its candidate for the office of the Senate chairman, but deferred its nominations for the offices of deputy chairman and the opposition leader.
Mr Gilani, who caused a major upset by defeating Finance Minister Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh in the March 3 Senate poll on a general seat from Islamabad, will face incumbent Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani, who has already been nominated as the candidate of the ruling alliance headed by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), in the election for the top Senate office for which polling will be held on March 12.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday said government senators are being approached to gain their support for the opposition’s candidate in the upcoming election for Senate chairman.
On the other hand, ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) has so far not announced its candidate for the office of deputy chairman, keeping the slot open and placing itself in a better bargaining position to ensure support of its allies and independent candidates.
Presiding over a meeting of his spokespersons, the prime minister vowed to win the chairman’s post despite opposition’s majority in the upper house.

ISLAMABAD: A meeting presided over by Finance Minister Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh on Monday decided to immediately fill all vacant posts of banking court judges and improve legislation for agricultural loans for an effective implementation of the Prime Minister’s Agriculture Transformation Plan.
The meeting reviewed the progress on directives of the prime minister to increase agriculture credit for the farming sector.
The meeting was attended by Minister for National Food Security and Research Syed Fakhar Imam, Governor of State Bank of Pakistan, Secretaries of Law and Justice, Economic Affairs Division, National Food Security and Research, Presidents of National Bank of Pakistan, ZTBL, Bank of Punjab and senior members of Boards of Revenue of Punjab, Sindh, KP, Balochistan and Azad Jammu & Kashmir.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that the Pakistan Democratic Movement – formed to dethrone the incumbent government – had failed before and will fail again in the future as well, as the whole nation has seen that people were bought with money in the Senate elections.
A day before the upper house of parliament elections, PDM joint candidate Yousuf Raza Gilani’s son, Ali Haider Gilani, was seen in a video clip with two ruling PTI MPs telling them how to waste votes. However, the MPs later claimed that it was part of their “sting operation” to expose the opposition’s tactics to damage the government’s vote bank.
