The leader of one of Canada’s newest federal parties which is trying to be a sort-of Bloc Québécois of the West says it’s ready for its first election, and hopes to have 25 candidates on board by the time the writ is dropped.
Last year, the Calgary-based Maverick Party, formerly Wexit Canada, became eligible to be on the next ballot. Longtime Conservative politician Jay Hill, who was government House leader under former prime minister Stephen Harper, is the party’s interim leader, at least until a suitable replacement has been chosen by members.
In an interview with iPolitics, Hill said the party is as ready as it can be for an election that he, like many, suspects will be called in August or September. The party has nearly 20 candidates running in Western Canada, most of them in Alberta, but Hill said the goal is to have at least 25 by the time the election is called.
