DCU Center to start charging rent for field hospital

WORCESTER The Civic Center Commission voted Thursday to start charging UMass Memorial Health Care rent for the use of the DCU Center as a COVID-19 field hospital.  Commissioners Thursday said they have been incredibly supportive of the arrangement that allowed UMass for the second time to erect a field hospital at the DCU Center, but noted that the facility has suffered staggering losses due to the pandemic, and thought it was fair to start charging rent. City Manager Edward M. Augustus, however, confirmed in a statement Thursday evening that despite the vote by the commission to gradually work toward charging full rent, Dr. Eric Dickson, CEO of UMass Memorial Healthcare, has agreed to pay 100% of the rent straight away.

UMass Memorial Health Care to start paying rent for COVID field hospital at Worcester DCU Center Updated Jan 22, 2021; UMass Memorial Health Care has agreed to start paying full rent for space it’s using at the Worcester DCU Center to run a COVID-19 field hospital. The Central Massachusetts health care system first ran a field hospital there last spring during the initial surge of the pandemic. When case counts rose again in the fall, the field hospital reopened and started treating patients in December. In November, the Civic Center Commission voted to allow UMass Memorial to use the space rent-free for two months. Following a commission meeting Thursday, UMass Memorial has agreed to start paying full rental costs.
