The Democratic Alliance (DA) is astounded that Siviwe Dongwana, one of South African Airways’ (SAA) two Business Rescue Practitioners (BRPs), has again managed to avoid accounting to Parliament for the airline’s business rescue debacle. Dongwana and SAA executives simply stayed away from a meeting with the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) today, on the basis that one of the BRPs, Les Matuson, had a bereavement in their family.

Wits University students at a rally – because of debt many will be unable to continue their studies
STUDENTS at Wits University in South Africa are embarking on a strike, warning that returning students may be unable to continue with their studies this academic year, because of student debt.
Wits, UKZN, UFS and other institutions too intend to disallow students with historical debt to register, citing financial strains on their costs of operation if they do not recover this money from students who owe it.
Meanwhile, University of South Africa (UNISA) students have taken the university to court for not filling over 20,000 seats because of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme’s (NSFAS) refusal to provide financial aid. The issue of financial exclusions at institutional level calls into question NSFAS’s funding as a result of Finance Minister Tito Mboweni’s austerity budget.

Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan as the âshareholderâ (government) representative for Denel will be on the receiving end of questions regarding reckless spending allegations at the troubled defence and technology conglomerate.
This emerged after a Denel delegation, led by current acting board chair Gloria Serobe, this week denied the allegations when addressing Parliamentâs financial watchdog, its Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA).
âWe have challenges, but are not at the stage where Denel is trading recklessly,â Serobe, acting Denel board chair following the resignation of Monhla Hlahla last month, was reported as telling the Parliamentary oversight committee. Hlahlaâs departure was made public via a notice to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) saying it was effective from 24 February.
