Of the total of 1,797 executives at 127 commercial broadcasters, only 2.2 percent, or 40, were female, according to the first such survey conducted in the year through March by the Japan Federation of Commercial Broadcast Workers Unions, with its umbrella organization calling for increased female representation in the sector. Commercial broadcasters must face this reality and improve gender balance, the Women s Conference of Commercial Broadcasting, under the wing of the federation, said in a statement, adding that such imbalance affects news coverage and content.

(Asahi Shimbun file photo) Nippon Television Network Corp. took the unusual step of using a news program to apologize for another program that on March 12 used a pejorative to refer to the nation’s indigenous Ainu people. In the program that aired, a comedian used the word “inu,” which means “dog” and was apparently intended as a pun on Ainu, when a documentary about an Ainu woman shown on the Hulu streaming video service was introduced.  According to Jirota Mokottunas Kitahara, an associate professor at Hokkaido University’s Center for Ainu and Indigenous Studies, dog has been used to belittle the Ainu people since olden days.

Sentai Filmworks Reveals ‘Kaiji’ Anime Series Trailer Based on the manga by Nobuyuki Fukumoto, which began in 1999 and ran for 48 volumes and inspired some live-action features, Sentai Filmworks has added two seasons of Kaiji to its back catalog pickup list with it set for an April 20th, 2021 release on Blu-ray. The two series, Kaiji Ultimate Survivor and  Kaiji Against All Rules previously saw a pickup for streaming by Crunchyroll way back in 2013. While we’ve been focusing a lot lately on Sentai’s trailers for shows that came out upwards of a decade ago, they’ve got a trailer for this series out now – a month ahead of its debut.
