HOUSTON When it comes to games that had him boiling over with frustration, Wednesday’s outing against the Indians will be near the top of the list for Astros starter Lance McCullers Jr. when all is said and done in 2021.
McCullers left the game with a two-run lead after 100 pitches with the bases loaded and no outs in the sixth inning and watched reliever Bryan Abreu record a pair of strikeouts before Ernie Clement the Indians’ nine-hole hitter cleared the bases with a three-run double to left-center.
That closed the book on McCullers and helped spoil the night for the Astros, who couldn’t finish off the season sweep of the Indians and lost the series finale, 5-4, at Minute Maid Park.

HOUSTON Cesar Hernandez’s batting average hasn’t reached the territory that he’s used to seeing, but his power continues at an unprecedented pace.
One flex of his muscles was the difference in the Indians 5-4 victory over the Astros on Wednesday night at Minute Maid Park, helping Cleveland snap a seven-game losing skid against Houston (six of which came this season).
“His batting average is lower than he’s accustomed to, but he’s also sitting on 16 home runs,” Indians manager Terry Francona said. “And a lot of them have been big ones, so it’s certainly been helpful. He’s a good pro. He shows up every day.”
HOUSTON (AP) â On a night dedicated to Jose Altuve s accomplishments, the Houston Astros star added to his already stellar resume with another huge game.
Altuve celebrated the 10th anniversary of his major league debut with a leadoff homer, and made the milestone twice as nice with a second shot on his next at-bat, leading the Astros to a 9-3 win over the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night.
âThe last three or four days have been a lot of emotions going through my body, he said. âItâs not easy to get to 10 years. This is very special to me. It means a lot, (and) with the team I have and the teammates I have, this is even more special.

HOUSTON The Indians learned the hard way that catcher Roberto Pérez can serve as a backup first baseman in a pinch.
First baseman Bobby Bradley was removed from the Indians 9-3 loss to the Astros on Tuesday night at Minute Maid Park with back spasms, and because utility guy Ernie Clement was already at third base filling in for José Ramírez, who’s dealing with elbow discomfort, the Indians had no other option than to turn to Pérez, who originally had the night off.
“We asked him [if he could play] and he said, ‘I’ve done it,’ and that was all we needed to hear,” Indians manager Terry Francona said. “At that point, we’re just trying to finish the game and not get anybody hurt.”
