HOUSTON He didn’t sign until early March and he spent more than a month on the injured list at the start of the regular season, but veteran right-hander Jake Odorizzi has to feel good about the momentum he’s built entering the All-Star break.
Odorizzi held the Yankees to two runs and seven hits and didn’t walk a batter in the Astros’ 4-0 loss Friday night, which was their second in a row on the heels of a six-game winning streak. A two-run double by Brett Gardner off Odorizzi in the fourth inning and a two-run double by DJ LeMahieu off reliever Bryan Abreu in the seventh spoiled the night for a sellout crowd of 40,857 at Minute Maid Park.

SEATTLE Before first pitch on Tuesday night, Yankees manager Aaron Boone made it clear that he and his players have grasped what s at stake. We understand the importance of these games, and obviously, the hole that we ve dug for ourselves here in the first half of the season, Boone said. This is a very important week for us. Hopefully, we can get it off on a good note tonight.
In a season full of inconsistencies and discouraging performances, it wouldn t have been surprising to see New York come out flat and struggle, finding a way to beat themselves. Instead, the Bombers opened their six-game road trip with a bang, pouring it on offensively while simultaneously stifling Seattle s bats.

A shooting at the Downtown Aquarium in Houston, Texas, Thursday evening left two people dead, including a suspect, according to reports.
At least one other person was hurt, police said, according to FOX 26 Houston.
The shooting happened at the aquarium s second-floor restaurant in the bar area just after 8 p.m. CT, KPRC-TV in Houston reported.
The suspect allegedly shot a man and a woman before shooting himself, Houston Police Department Lt. Larry Crowson told KPRC.
Both men were pronounced dead at the scene and the woman was taken to the hospital after being shot in the leg. Her condition is unknown.

An overpowering outing from rookie Logan Gilbert, two shutdown innings from the Seattle bullpen, and three Mariners home runs negated a quality start from Jordan Montgomery today at T-Mobile Park. The 4-0 loss prevented the Yankees from completing the series sweep and also ended New York’s three-game win streak on an eerily quiet note.
It had been noted both on our PSA game preview and on the YES Network pregame show that Montgomery has been excellent at generating weak contact. Mariners third baseman Kyle Seager clearly didn’t get the memo, evidenced by his 105-mph laser over the center-field wall in the top of the first inning. Although it was only a 1-0 lead, it was a loud 1-0 lead that the Mariners took into the second inning particularly after falling down early to the Yankees during the previous two nights.
