Parliament is set to vet persons nominated by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for ministerial positions by asking the House to consider the nominees and approve them to their various portfolios.
Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, who read the communication from the President to the House at the plenary, referred the nominations to the Appointments Committee of Parliament.
The 26-member Appointments Committee, chaired by First Deputy Speaker Joseph Osei-Owusu, would vet the nominees to determine their suitability for the positions after which it would report to the House when it sits in full, known as the plenary.
In the list submitted, some nominees who served in the first term of President Akufo-Addo’s Administration have been maintained, some have had their portfolios changed, while others are new entrants.
A former Gender Minister, Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, has said that President Akufo-Addo’s nominee for the same ministry in his second term, Sara Adwoa Safo will be thoroughly examined at the Appointments Committee of Parliament to ensure that she is fit to occupy that position.
She explained that the functions of the Gender Minister requires someone who has what it takes to carry out the duties hence, the decision to thoroughly examine her.
Adwoa Safo who is also Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya was among the list of ministerial nominees President Akufo-Addo submitted to Parliament on Thursday January 21.
If approved by the Appointments Committee, the Former Minister of State in Charge of Public Procurement, will be heading the Gender Ministry.
Members of the minority caucus in Parliament have accused President Akufo-Addo of breaching some provisions of the Presidential (Transition) Act 2012, Act 845. Leader of the Minority group, Haruna Iddrisu, claimed the President failed to furnish Parliament with copies of the handing over notes of the various ministries, departments and agencies from his previous administration, insisting that Section 6 of the Act ldquo;requires government to prepare the handing over notes 30 days
President Akufo-Addo is expected in the course of the week to release the list of persons to serve as ministers and deputy ministers in the second term of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.
