COVID-19 s lasting impact on Wayne and Holmes counties in 2020

A little more than 5% of Wayne County residents tested positive for COVID-19 in 2020. The percentage was slightly less in Holmes County. The virus may have spared most of the population but its impact left everyone scrambling. Gov. Mike DeWine acted earlier than most leaders across the United States to prevent a surge of COVID-19 patients from flooding the state’s hospitals. The Ohio Department of Health issued months-long stay-at-home orders forcing nursing homes to lock down, schools to close, and restaurants to transition to carryout or delivery service only. Manufacturers changed their productions to make personal protective equipment. Many small businesses closed shop, some permanently, and community celebrations were canceled left and right.

2021 to open with masks, sanitizer | News, Sports, Jobs

mgreier@salemnews.net SALEM Area residents, businesses, schools and community governments are beginning 2021 pretty much the same way they ended 2020 masked up and armed with hand sanitizer. Wash your hands became the mantra, social distancing became the practice and cancellations of everything from the Salem Super Cruise to fireworks displays and the Summer Concert Series became the norm last year. Lives were lost to the pandemic, with many families in mourning not in some far off place, but in Salem, Leetonia and many other local communities. With 2021 comes a new year and new hope as distribution of the vaccine begins.

North Canton DORA designed to promote the community

Stephan B. Wilder There have been questions and concerns regarding the Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area for the town center of North Canton and the Main Street corridor. I believe some of this stems from a lack of information. I would like to take this opportunity to share information that has brought us to this decision. First, it is important to say that the DORA is being created primarily to support positive economic impact for present and future downtown food establishments, restaurants and businesses. One of the goals of the DORA is to help businesses with increased foot traffic and to allow for outdoor seating on our narrow sidewalks. At this time, restaurants with a liquor permit that would like to have outdoor seating are required by law to fence or rope off an area adjacent to their building. We do not have wide enough sidewalks to accommodate those barriers.
