38 new COVID-19 cases reported Tuesday in Alaska Jay Luzardo © Provided by Anchorage KTUU-TV Coronavirus (CDC) ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services reported 38 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, and no additional deaths tied to the virus. All of the 38 new cases reported Tuesday were identified among Alaska residents of the following communities: Anchorage: 12 Wasilla: 3 Unalaska: 1 With 362 total Alaska resident deaths that have been tied to COVID-19, the state still has one of the lower death rates in the country. Cases also continue to trend downward in Alaska. The statewide alert level, which had recently been “high” for months, is now back at “intermediate” with an average daily case rate over the last 14 days of 7.99 cases per 100,000, according to DHSS. That’s lower than this past weekend when the rate was 8.16 per 100,000.

The 2010 Census is the most comprehensive, reliable, and recent urban-rural classification available. According to the Census Bureau, rural land encompasses any land that isn t an urban area. To be considered an urban area, a place has to have a densely settled core of census tracts or blocks and count at least 2,500 people, at least 1,500 of whom must be residents of non-institutional buildings. Areas with 50,000 people or more are considered urbanized areas, while areas with between 2,500 and 50,000 people are considered urban clusters.

According to DHSS, transmission of the virus is currently increasing statewide, and the state as a whole is still in the high-alert level when it come to the average case rate per 100,000 people over the last two weeks. Virus transmission has increased for the second week in a row, according to a weekly case update from the state.
