Easter weekend snowstorm sets new Fairbanks record

Updated at 6:15 p.m. Fairbanks broke several snow records over Easter weekend, as high levels of snow were recorded both Saturday and Sunday. The official amount measured at the National Weather Service office was 14.6 inches, according to meteorologist Alex Young. Unofficial measurements ranged from 12 to 22 inches, with the highest amounts recorded in the hills around Fairbanks. Young said that Old Murphy Dome Road saw the greatest accumulation with 22 inches. The weekend snow event demolished daily records for the month of April and set the highest two-day total for the month. Seven inches was reported on Saturday, breaking the record of 1.4 inches that was set in 1949. On Sunday, 6.2 inches was reported, which broke the previous record of 2.9 inches set in 1949. The previous two-day record was 11.4 inches set in 1948.

Mayor to make State of the Borough address: Livestreamed event will include new spending plan

Mayor Bryce Ward introduces his budget proposal for the fiscal year that begins July 1 at a State of the Borough address to be streamed live online starting at 2 p.m. Wednesday. In a break with tradition, the mayor is pitching his budget plan to the public a day ahead of the presentation to the Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly. Ward aims to introduce a plan that maintains the current level of services with the same or a decreased property tax rate, he has said. Budget planning has focused on “looking for efficiencies and ways to affect the budget but not what service the folks are receiving,” Ward wrote in an emailed answer to questions.

Fairbanks Borough schools closed Monday as region digs out from storm

Fairbanks North Star Borough Schools will be closed on Monday as the region digs out from more than a foot of snow in places much more that fell over the Easter weekend.  The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities asked people to avoid traveling on the Parks Highway, as plows were unable to keep up from the falling and drifting snow. Some freezing rain also was reported in the area Saturday night.  Scattered power outages were reported this morning, and as the wind begins  picking up early this afternoon, more are expected.  As of 9 a.m., unofficial measurements showed more than 19 inches of snow on Old Murphy Dome Road, 14 inches in Goldstream and almost a foot in Two Rivers. The official measurement on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus was 12.4 inches.
