Driver facing vehicular homicide, drug charges in fatal October wreck in Covington COVINGTON, Ga. A second driver is facing vehicular homicide and other charges related to an October head-on collision on Access Road in which a 19-year-old passenger in her car died. Briahna Volny, 20, of Covington, was charged Feb. 16 with Homicide by Vehicle in the First Degree, Driving Under the Influence of Drugs and Improper Lane Usage at Newton County Jail, according to information from the Newton County Sheriff s Office.  Volny was the driver of a 2006 Mercedes E350W in which a passenger in her vehicle, Amayah Parris, 19, of Covington, died in the Oct. 24 wreck on Access Road, one mile west of Old Oxford Road, the Georgia State Patrol reported.

Former district attorney candidate and assistant DA Destiny Bryant was sworn in as Newton County Associate Probate and Magistrate judge Friday.  Probate Judge Melanie Bell appointed Bryant and swore her in during a ceremony at the Judge Horace Johnson Jr. Judicial Center in Covington. “Through her time in DeKalb County, her return here, and even into Henry County, I know she, as a professional and as a person, will embody all of those characteristics that a judge should embody,” Bell said in a video posted on the county government’s website.

Candice Branche COVINGTON — Candice Branche has been selected to serve as Newton County Juvenile Court judge for the next four years. The selection was announced Dec. 24. Every four years, the Superior Court judges in the Alcovy Judicial Circuit are tasked with appointing a Juvenile Court judge in each county in the circuit — Newton and Walton. In Walton County, the judges reappointed Judge Stan Rhymer, who has served as Juvenile Court judge there for the past 16 years. Branche succeeds Judge Sheri Roberts, who died due to ongoing health issues in April, just days before she was scheduled to retire. Roberts had served as Juvenile Court judge in Newton County for more than 10 years.
