2 men suspected in area homicide, arson arrested in Clarksville

Sixty-nine year old Charles Stepp and 34-year-old Steven Stepp, both of the Fallsville area, were apprehended without incident at a residence in Clarksville. Newton County Sheriff Glenn Wheeler says the Deer and Ozone fire departments were called to the scene of a house fire west of Fallsville Saturday afternoon at around 3:35. While fighting the fire, personnel located a male body inside the residence, believed to be the homeowner. Evidence at the scene and other information reportedly confirmed a homicide and arson had occurred.

James Lee Evans Turns Himself in to Newton County, TX, Sheriff s Office

James Lee Evans, 47, of Newton County TX, turned himself in to the Newton County Sheriff s Office. Evans has been wanted in connection with the theft of approximately $160,000 worth of equipment from Collin County, northeast of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. The stolen items were discovered on Evans property near Burkeville. Evans had evaded officers and K9 s for several weeks.

A Newton County resident facing charges of uploading child pornography had been a student government leader at Georgia State University s Newton campus and a candidate for Student Government Association president for its Atlanta campus before his early December arrest. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation charged Carlos Porter, 21, with Sexual Exploitation of Children (Possession of Child Sexual Abuse Material) in violation of state law Dec. 8, a news release stated. He was the Student Government Association executive vice president of GSU s Newton campus and was a candidate for SGA president for the Atlanta campus, according to a report in the university s student newspaper The Signal.

On Sunday (Dec. 20), the Newton County Sheriff s Office called Benton County Sheriff s Office Air Division (BCSOAD) around 4:50 p.m. asking for assistance in the search of a 68-year-old man who had gotten lost in the mountains while hiking with his family. BCSOAD was able to locate the missing man within 13 minutes of being up in the air, marked the location and gave the coordinates to the search and rescue teams on foot.
