KJAS in Jasper, TX, shared that Newton County Sheriff Robert Burby reports that one of his deputies was involved in an early Friday morning vehicle pursuit that turned into a foot pursuit, and ultimately the suspects managed to elude capture.
Shortly after 8:00 a.m. Friday, January 15, 2021, Sheriff Burby said Deputy Quinton Owens tried to stop a Toyota pickup truck on U.S. Highway 190 in the Bon Wier area, but the driver fled, leading the deputy onto Farm to Market Road 1416, and then onto county roads where they stopped.
Sheriff Burby said the white male driver and white female passenger bailed out of the vehicle and fled on foot into a heavily wooded area. Sheriff Burby said they now know the identities of the suspects and that they will be seeking arrest warrants.

Newton County Sheriff Robert Burby, who has been on the job for just over a week, said on Monday that he and Chief Deputy Odis Lane have completed a series of one-on-one meetings with each employee, during which he explained what he expects of each of them.
Burby said âI informed them that I will create and sustain a highly productive work environment. Our goal is to provide quality and effective services to the public. I made it clear that this will be accomplished by effectively communicating what is needed and what needs to be done.â
As for himself, Burby said he told each employee that he, himself, has an obligation to fulfill. âI explained my role as their leader and what they can expect from me as well. I challenged each of them to always preform at their best no matter how difficult. I told them that the Citizens of Newton County are our customers and quality public safety is our productâ, said Burby.
Newton County Sheriff Robert Burby said on Tuesday that some of his staff members have now received Coronavirus vaccine shots, while a few others are scheduled to receive their inoculations soon.
Burby emphasized that his employees are absolutely not required to receive the shots, but he said that he has encouraged them to do so, noting that both he and Chief Deputy Odis Lane have received their vaccinations. Burby said âI got it and the Chief Deputy got it. Weâre around a lot of people, so itâs for the safety of ourselves and also for the safety of others.â
