Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said Tuesday that Michael Conlon, 28, of Newton, was killed after refusing to comply with orders to drop his knife Monday afternoon. State and local police had been responding to a 911 call from the owner of “Indulge!” in Newton. Ryan said officers located Conlon, who lived above the shop, in a second floor hallway. The officers followed him to the third floor and called for backup, including a mental health clinician, she said.

At a press conference late Tuesday, the DA s office said it was investigating the shooting, and that the man shot by police was attempting to rob a candy store on Lincoln Street Tuesday afternoon. The man, whose identity has not been released, lived in the apartments above the store, according to DA Marian Ryan. State police Col. Christopher Mason said Newton officers called to the scene shot the man after they tried to subdue him with a beanbag shotgun and a taser. State police officers also responded to the robbery call.
