Authorities in Massachusetts have identified a man fatally shot by police above a local candy store this week.
Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said Tuesday that Michael Conlon, 28, of Newton, was killed after refusing to comply with orders to drop his knife Monday afternoon.
State and local police had been responding to a 911 call from the owner of “Indulge!” in Newton. Ryan said officers located Conlon, who lived above the shop, in a second floor hallway.
The officers followed him to the third floor and called for backup, including a mental health clinician, she said.

Newton police fatally shot a 28-year-old man Tuesday who officers said was holding a knife, according to the Middlesex district attorney s office.
At a press conference late Tuesday, the DA s office said it was investigating the shooting, and that the man shot by police was attempting to rob a candy store on Lincoln Street Tuesday afternoon. The man, whose identity has not been released, lived in the apartments above the store, according to DA Marian Ryan.
State police Col. Christopher Mason said Newton officers called to the scene shot the man after they tried to subdue him with a beanbag shotgun and a taser. State police officers also responded to the robbery call.

It started around 1:43 p.m. Tuesday when a man allegedly walked into the Indulge! candy store in the Newton Highlands commercial district while carrying a knife, an action that a Newton police dispatcher interpreted as a robbery underway, officials said.
Just a few minutes after police received that first 911 call, Newton officers shot and fatally wounded the 28-year-old man who lived in an apartment above the candy store during a confrontation inside the building on Lincoln Street, officials said.
