‘Work and a few vacations each year is all we’ve done for the past 34 years’ This couple has $2.6 million and no idea where to retire MarketWatch 1 hr ago
Dear MarketWatch,
My wife and I will turn 59 soon and plan to retire mid-2021 (we’ll both be 59). We currently live in Houston, but want to move somewhere with nice scenery, more moderate weather and less traffic. We can both tolerate heat better than cold. Climate may not be so bad in retirement since we wouldn’t need to shovel the cars out of the snow to go to work every day.
Lava Lands Visitor Center Opens Thursday
Newberry National Volcanic Monument will open many of its sites for limited capacity due to COVID-19 for summer visitors next week.
Beginning on Thursday, Lava River Cave will open with daily operations thru Sunday August 22, 2021. The site will close on August 23, 2021 for the rest of the season for construction activities to improve access to the cave.
For COVID-19 mitigations, the entrance gate to the cave will open at 9 a.m. but will close intermittently for brief periods of time during the day to help manage crowd size in the cave and parking lot. Closures of the gate will not be scheduled and typically will be limited to 30 minutes. The entrance gate will close daily at 3:45 p.m.

Paulina Lake Guard Station served Newberry Caldera
The historic Forest Service facility now currently used as Paulina Visitor Center
Paulina Lake Guard Station is a Forest Service facility located along the west road entrance into Newberry Caldera and is about 200 yards from Paulina Lake. The guard station was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1938. It was designed in the Pacific Northwest region distinctive Cascadia rustic style. Lumber was utilized in its construction.
It is a three-room residence originally built to house the forest guard stationed in Newberry Caldera. The three rooms were a private living room with a wood stove for heat, a kitchen with a large wood stove for cooking, and a large bedroom.
