COVID-19: Polk County nursing homes prepare to receive vaccinations

LAKELAND  Residents and employees at Polk County nursing homes will begin receiving shots containing the COVID-19 vaccine this week. A team will arrive Tuesday at Florida Presbyterian Homes in Lakeland to deliver injections for residents and staff of the center’s skilled-nursing facility, CEO Joe Xanthopoulos said. Xanthopoulos said his facility’s administrator received a call Thursday afternoon from a Walgreeens representative informing her of the schedule. But Xanthopoulos was disappointed to find out that residents and staff of the center’s assisted-living facility will not receive the first round of inoculations. “The plan was that in this first phase they would be doing all long-term care, which meant assisted-living residents and staff as well as skilled nursing,” Xanthopoulos said Friday. “I think because they did not get enough vaccines at this point in time, this first run, this first clinic, is just for our skilled-care residents and staff.”

Area pharmacies question if Walgreens, CVS, have staff power to vaccinate nursing homes

By Todd Epp (Creative Commons photo via Pxhere) DES MOINES, Iowa (KELO.com) Some local pharmacists question whether CVS and Walgreens have enough staffing to quickly administer COVID-19 vaccinations to Iowa’s nursing home residents by themselves, especially in the state’s hard-to-reach rural areas. Iowa state officials and company representatives said they believe there are enough pharmacists and technicians to equitably reach all of the state’s long-term care facilities. But independent pharmacists said the national chains’ mass hiring initiatives and efforts to poach already-employed workers point otherwise.
