A senior manager at Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) in northern KwaZulu-Natal was shot dead on Monday while driving to work at the mineral sands operation, which has been the source of violent community conflict.
Richards Bay Minerals, one of the big operations in the port city, is owned by Australia’s Rio Tinto, which confirmed that Nico Swart was killed on Monday morning and that the circumstances of the attack on the GM of operational services are unknown. The Zululand Observer reported that more than 20 high-calibre bullets were fired into his car.

Tharisa, the platinum and chrome mine owned by the Pouroulis family, has acquired the whole of Salene Chrome Zimbabwe in a $3m deal, which will be settled in cash.
“The acquisition provides geographic diversification with access to a premium chrome product, a short development timeline and a low capital requirement,” the company said on Wednesday in a statement.

In a single quarter, Sibanye-Stillwater generated more earnings from its SA platinum group metal (PGM) mines than it paid for those assets in an aggressive race to go top of the world in mine-to-market supplies of those metals.
Sibanye made rapid-fire purchases of Aquarius Platinum and the Rustenburg mines owned by Anglo American Platinum before swooping on then-world No 3 platinum miner Lonmin, scooping all these assets up over a five-year period for R13.5bn.

Impala Platinum (Implats), the third-largest source of SA platinum group metals (PGMs), says load-shedding and community protests weighed on output in its third quarter to end-March, though it did increase sales by drawing down inventory.
Load-shedding, as well as community protests, worsened by SA’s pandemic-hit economy, are expected to remain threats to the miner in 2021, though it is still upbeat about elevated precious metal prices.
