Late great engineers: Beatrice Shilling - Battle of Britain innovator

9th February 2021 10:37 am 9th February 2021 10:37 am Beatrice Shilling’s engineering fix to a major design flaw in World War Two Hurricane and Spitfire fighter plane engines contributed to the eventual outcome of the Battle of Britain. Written by Nick Smith It was only a brass washer in the shape of a thimble. But it stopped Britain’s Merlin engine carburettors flooding in temporary negative-g manoeuvres such as a nosedive or inverted flight. While the RAF toiled over a long-term solution to their engines cutting out in combat, an engineer by the name of Beatrice Shilling pulled a rabbit out of the hat in the form of an ingenious workaround. Her ‘RAE Restrictor’ had been designed to allow just enough fuel to maintain power while preventing flooding, and crucially, the device could be fitted without removing planes from operation. RAF pilots referred to the innovation as ‘Mrs Shilling’s Orifice’, a ribaldry that has amused engineering students of a certain

UCAS data shows shift toward engineering degrees

5th February 2021 10:22 am 5th February 2021 10:22 am New data from UCAS has shown a big shift toward technology-based subjects, with significant growth in applications to engineering and computer science degrees. Image: Adobestock The application and acceptance data for the 2020 cycle has revealed that STEM subjects are continuing to increase in popularity with acceptance to computer science courses rising from 20,420 in 2011 to 30,090 in 2020 and acceptances to engineering degrees up from 25,995 in 2011 to 31,545 in 2020. Lydia Amarquaye, education policy adviser at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, described the figures as encouraging, adding that the IMechE hopes to see a further increase as young people see the value and employability of engineers through their response to challenges prevented by the pandemic.

World Refrigeration Day helps fund new STEM academy

World Refrigeration Day helps fund new STEM academy Aim of STEMAZING Inspiration Academy is to enable more women to provide STEM role models to primary schools World Refrigeration Day is one of the sponsors behind a new academy which aims to support women s representation in STEM subjects. The STEMAZING Inspiration Academy has been founded by Alexandra Knight, who gave up her job with Amey to create the  STEMAZINGKids organisation. The academy has two objectives: to support women to be more confident with public engagement; and to inspire children with STEM. The programme includes training and workshops for women in STEM to build their confidence on camera and their STEM delivery toolbox. These newly empowered role models then deliver a 6-week programme of LIVE online STEM sessions designed to engage children aged 5 - 9 years old.
