Feed protein from grass: Do green biorefineries have a future in Ireland?

A grass biorefinery project run over two years in Ireland has just published its final results, with several co-products produced showing great promise for dairy and pig diets. The goal of the Irish Department of Agriculture initiative, funded by the EU innovation partnership EIP-Agri, was to demonstrate the use of small-scale biorefineries to convert freshly harvested grass into a range of high value products; it was born out of the idea of establishing a bottom up, multi-actor approach to addressing challenges in the Irish agricultural sector, combining consortia which include farmers as well as researchers to tackle issues.  Members of the Biorefinery Glas team © Biorefinery Glas

Blarney s Daniel is MTU s first official composer laureate

After winning the Munster Technological University s (MTU) competition to create a new piece of music to mark the official foundation of the university, Blarney man Daniel Murphy can add a new title to his CV: MTU s first composer laureate. Daniel graduated top of his class, the BA in Popular Music, in 2019 and has been busy as a freelance arranger and producer since then. Daniel attended Cork School of Music as a schoolboy, studying drums with Stephen Kelly. Switching to keyboards with David Hayes for his BAPM major, he also studied arranging with Cormac McCarthy. The MTU Composition Competition was open to graduates of CIT and IT Tralee, which recently merged to form the MTU, and attracted a fantastic entry of 13 high-quality scores and electronic mock-ups.
