The Grand National winner embarked on a 191-mile charity walk to represent the 191 days from his diagnosis in 1979. The fundraising walk, 40 for 40, highlights 40 memorable stops, all connected to his remarkable life story and representing every year from 1981 to 2021. On Saturday (May 8), Bob visited the Royal Marsden as one of his walking points due to the pivotal role it played in his cancer recovery.
Researchers find CD38-targeting drugs may show promise against prostate cancer

A new study suggests that drugs which target the CD38 protein molecule may show promise against prostate cancer by ‘reawakening’ the body’s immune response against this tumour type.
Researchers from the Institute of Cancer Research, London (ICR) and the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust discovered that patients whose immune cells within tumours displayed the CD38 protein molecule on their surface may have worse survival outcomes compared to those without.
In fact, the CD38 protein molecule appears to suppress the immune response of these patients, according to the researchers, and signals that prostate cancer is successfully evading the immune system.
Scientists have discovered that a key protein may be the secret to treating prostate cancer patients with ‘miracle’ immunotherapy drugs.
Clinical trials have now begun – with the goal of unleashing cancer-killing white blood cells to attack the tumour.
Immunotherapies have had stunning results against some types of the disease.
But, so far, they have failed to work against prostate cancer and scientists have not been able to work out why.
