Jean Mensa caused a lot of mess in election 2020 than her predecessors – Justice Abdulai

Jean Mensa caused a lot of mess in election 2020 than her predecessors – Justice Abdulai The Electoral Commissioner, Jean Mensah has caused a lot of confusion in Ghana’s electoral system than her forerunners, a private legal practitioner, Justice Abdulai has said. Mr Abdulai explained that, during the period the EC Boss was the Executive Director of the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), she gave a lot of practical measures that should be undertaken by the Commission in order to better the electoral system. However, he said, when given the opportunity to serve as the Chair of the elections management body, she has neglected all those measures to adopt new ones that in his opinion, do not help the system.

IDEG wants state funding support for CSOs

+ As donor support for civil society dwindles, Mr Kwesi Jonah, a Senior Research Fellow, Ghana Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), is advocating state funding of civil society organisations (CSOs). He noted that as international development partners and donor agencies were gradually cutting off funding supports to CSOs, African Governments must create funding support for their local CSOs. He intimated that in most advanced democracies such as the United States and Denmark, Governments provide funding support for CSOs, stating that African governments could do same; and that they could ensure that a body was set-up to regulate the disbursement and utilization of such funds.

Sweden s Covid-19 failures have exposed the myths of the lockdown-sceptics

Many strange things happened in 2020, but one of the strangest was the romance between Britain’s Covid-sceptics and Sweden. It turned out to be an ill-fated one, ending in tragedy, but it was intense while it lasted. For much of this year, those who object to measures to control the virus have hailed Sweden as a libertarian paradise, supposedly showing us how Covid-19 could be kept under control without intrusive government restrictions. Of late, these champions have fallen silent. It’s not hard to explain why. Recent days have seen Sweden’s Nordic neighbours Finland and Norway offering emergency medical assistance as Stockholm’s hospitals have been overwhelmed, infections and deaths have spiked dramatically upward, and the King of Sweden has made an unprecedented criticism of the government’s bungled strategy.

2020 Lessons, 2021 Priorities

2020 Lessons, 2021 Priorities this post authored by Mary C. Daly What lessons should we take from a difficult year - and what should our priorities be for 2021? Overcoming the harsh and uneven economic impacts of COVID-19 and returning to full employment and sustainable 2% inflation will be the Federal Reserve’s chief concerns. But success will require us to have confidence in the power of our tools. The following is adapted from a presentation by the president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco to the Arizona State University Economic Forecast Luncheon on December 1. Hello everyone. It’s safe to say that 2020 has been a year to remember. Twelve months ago, we were in the midst of the longest economic expansion in U.S. history. Unemployment sat near historic lows, wages and incomes were rising, and inflation was moving gradually back toward our 2% target.
