The Institute of Development Studies (IDS) is pleased to offer the opportunity to join our Board of Trustees and participate in delivering our mission in which we want a more equitable and sustainable world, where people everywhere can live their lives free from poverty and injustice.
Purpose of the role
To contribute as part of the board of trustees to the governance of the Institute in accordance with Charity Commission requirements and the Institute’s principles of effective governance. We are looking for three Trustees who fit under these profiles:
Profile 1 (two positions). Individuals with significant international reputations in the field of development studies research, particularly as academics or public intellectuals. One or both should be in the disciplinary field of economics.

The migration of African youth has been strongly associated with security issues for the continent and Europe. However, mobility is part and parcel of ordinary life and essential for finding livelihoods.

This webinar addresses the trends in mobility among youth in West Africa and the Horn. Potential implications of the pandemic will be discussed. The webinar is the first of a webinar series on youth in Africa and MENA region, which is linked to the IDS Strategic Research Initiative ‘Ensuring decent work and inclusive politics for youth’ and is also part of IDS’ European Engagement strategy.

Pastoralists are some of the most marginalised people on the planet, but they have much to teach us all. Pastoralists make a living from livestock on extensive dry and montane rangelands across the world, continuously living with and from uncertainty.
Like agrarian societies everywhere, pastoralists are confronted by the incursions of neoliberal capitalism: once remote pastoral regions become sites for investment and pastoralists’ livelihoods are undermined. New relations of class, gender and generation emerge, with transformed practices of production, labour and market engagement emerging across pastoral settings.
