The COVID-19 pandemic will be remembered most for the immense loss of life and health it caused, but also for some famous forecasts gone wrong.
Simulations at the pandemic s start by the University of Minnesota and Minnesota Department of Health predicted that 74,000 COVID-19 deaths by August 2020 could be reduced to 50,000 through mitigations that limited social contact. But as August 2021 approaches, the state s toll is nearing 7,700.
Meanwhile, the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation in Washington (IHME) predicted 60,000 COVID-19 deaths nationwide by last August. That total was quickly eclipsed and has surged beyond 600,000 this summer.

In the US, cases are on the rise in all 50 states and Washington, DC, a CNN analysis of data from Johns Hopkins University found.
In 38 states, cases have risen at least 50% more than the previous week.
The Post reported that in low-vaccination states like Arkansas and Missouri, COVID-19 wards are reopening in hospitals as cases surge.

Dr. Rochelle Walensky, Director of the CDC, and Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, have been urging Americans for weeks, especially those in areas with low vaccination rates, to get vaccinated against the virus to protect themselves from the more transmissible Delta variant.

Las Vegas became the second city after Los Angeles to reintroduce the indoor mask policy for all people - regardless of vaccination status - as the Indian Delta variant spreads along the West Coast.

As of now, this is a Southern Nevada Health District recommendation for the Las Vegas area; as opposed to Los Angeles County, where it s a requirement.
