India s renewable energy growth stalled by delay in signing PSAs
April 08, 2021
As per the report, nearly 19GW of renewable energy capacity tendered by Solar Energy Corporation are yet to be signed by discoms. Delays in signing power sale agreements (PSAs) are a bottleneck in the growth of India’s renewable energy capacity, jeopardising the Government’s target of 175 gigawatts (GW) by 2022, dampening investor confidence and threatening the viability of projects.
According to the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) and JMK Research, PSAs for nearly 19GW of renewable energy capacity tendered by Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) are yet to be signed by state-owned distribution companies (discoms). Manufacturing-linked solar projects account for the majority (63%) of this capacity.

Note: Because of the high volume of news regarding the coronavirus outbreak, that news has been published separately:
There hasn t been much change in the trajectory of either US Covid metric: new cases continue to increase at a modest pace, while US Covid deaths continue to fall. New cases of Covid confirmed over the week ending April 3rd were 5.9% higher that those confirmed over the week ending March 27th, and 15.9% higher than those of the week ending March 20th, while US Covid deaths during the week ending April 3rd were 12.2% lower than the prior week, and down 74.7% from the peak week in late January.

Earlier this year, Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway pulled out of a proposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminal in Saguenay, Quebec. The project developer cited the “current Canadian political context” as the reason why Berkshire Hathaway bailed on them, including recent rail blockades led by hereditary chiefs of the Wet’suwet’en First Nation in British Columbia.
The rail blockades targeted an entirely separate fossil fuel project TC Energy’s Coastal GasLink pipeline, which would cross unceded Wet’suwet’en territory. The protests rapidly spread around the country, with students, environmental groups, and other First Nations joining the rail blockades in solidarity.
Renewables Accounted for 42% of ERCOT’s Energy Generation in March

Data from the Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) hourly electric grid monitor shows that wind generation used by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) smashed its previous high, topping 10.4 million megawatt-hours (MWh) during the month 2 million MWh above its previous high set last December. That output pushed wind’s share of the ERCOT electricity market to 38.6% and the No. 1 spot in total generation, another first for the rapidly expanding resource, according to Dennis Wamsted of the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA).
Wamsted’s analysis shows that for the month of March, solar generation topped 1 million MWh, a level it had only reached three times previously (in June, July, and August 2020). Combined, the two renewable resources accounted for 42.4% of ERCOT’s output during the month, well ahead of gas, at 30%, and coal, at just 14.9%.
