Why Hydrogen? The idea of using hydrogen as an energy carrier is not new but this time there is hope that hydrogen will finally make a difference to energy supply and emission reduction. Part of the reason is that the hydrogen-electricity (“hydricity”) model is expected to be far cheaper than an electricity only model for decarbonisation of the energy sector. Apart from balancing intermittency of renewables, hydrogen can also facilitate decarbonisation of heavy industry (iron & steel, chemicals, cement, shipping and long-haul surface transport) which has proved to be a challenge for electricity from renewables. The progress made in reducing the cost of producing low carbon hydrogen is also another reason for the revival of interest in hydrogen.

IEEFA: India could compete against China in solar module production with the right government support The focus should be on helping manufacturers become globally competitive 7 January 2021 (IEEFA India): Although one of the top 10 solar module producers in the world, India is lagging behind its biggest competitor China, finds a new report by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) and JMK Research. The report, Viability Assessment of New Domestic Solar Module Manufacturing Units, finds current production capacity in India is only able to meet 35% of total annual domestic demand. Co-written by IEEFA’s Vibhuti Garg and JMK’s Jyoti Gulia and co, the report seeks to explain why India is lagging, and what can be done to increase India’s energy security while accelerating its ambitious target to reach 450 gigawatts of renewables by 2030.

Tri-State only tells part of the story

Dear Editor:  Tri-State Generation and Transmission, the regional cooperative that Sangre de Cristo Electric Association and 21 other electric coops in Colorado belong to, released their Energy Resource Plan in December.  Tri-State is working to update their outdated and broken business model, with the aim of becoming more competitive with other utilities in the state.  The changes they are making promise lower rates and cleaner energy for rural customers like us, and a better working relationship between Tri-State and their member co-ops. Among the promises Tri-State has publicized is a commitment to reduce their carbon emissions by 80 percent by 2030.  To achieve this, they promise to retire their expensive Colorado coal assets and invest in cheaper solar energy projects and battery storage instead.
