My rifle, previously part of the US arsenal, was not and is not an “assault” weapon. The AR-15, a semiautomatic rifle, is not an “assault” weapon. My firearms have never left their safe storage and gone out to kill or injure anyone. My firearms, like all others, do not possess the ability of independent operation. My individual gun ownership right is protected by the Constitution; “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” That individual right was reaffirmed by the Heller decision; the Court ultimately concluded that the second amendment guarantee[s] the individual right to possess and carry weapons in case of confrontation and the right of law-abiding, responsible citizens to use arms in defense of hearth and home. Note “responsible” and “law abiding.”
