Why Is Hiring Hard Right Now? - The New York Times

Image In the past few weeks, 22 states have announced they would end federal pandemic unemployment benefits, which pay recipients $300 on top of state benefits and are scheduled to run into September. (New Hampshire is the latest.) Many of the states’ governors, all Republicans, made statements similar to that of Gov. Henry McMaster of South Carolina, who said the expanded benefits are “incentivizing and paying workers to stay at home rather than encouraging them to return to the workplace.” The U.S. Chamber of Commerce said the same. Businesses of all types report that they are having trouble hiring despite high unemployment. But are expanded unemployment benefits really to blame?

Child care at core of women s slow post-pandemic return to work

encrier/iStock (NEW YORK) In 1971, Congress passed the Comprehensive Child Development Act, legislation that would have established a network of nationally funded, comprehensive child care centers. But President Richard Nixon vetoed the legislation, and Congress has not passed anything similar in the five decades since. Now 50 years later, President Joe Biden has proposed an ambitious legislative proposal his “American Families Plan” that would, among other things, create universal pre-K for 3- and 4-year-olds, cap how much low- and middle-income Americans must spend on child care, extend Affordable Care Act tax credits and expand paid leave. Amid the global coronavirus pandemic that has put the nation’s child care crisis in the spotlight and pushed more than two million women out of the workforce, advocates of child care reform say they remain cautiously optimistic that this will be a time for real change for parents, and especially moms, in the United States.

Pay equity, domestic violence issues matter in Mississippi: commentary

View Comments While we monitored various issues related to our mission during the recent Mississippi legislative session, the National Coalition of 100 Black Women Inc., Central Mississippi Chapter supported matters concerning pay equity and domestic violence through raising awareness. We celebrate House Bill 695 Domestic Violence Fund which helps stop the violence by removing the matching funds requirement for the State Domestic Violence Fund. The bill was signed into law Gov. Tate Reeves.  Mississippi, however, is the only state without a equal pay law; therefore we will continue to support legislation purporting requirement of equal pay for equal work by women and men.

Is Your Spouse a Financial Bully? Subtle Signs of Abuse to Watch for

Getty Images It may come as a surprise to learn that many people who experience domestic abuse in a relationship are dealing with more than just physical and verbal abuse from their significant others. A study conducted by the Center for Financial Security showed that 99% of domestic abuse involves some financial abuse on top of the better-known forms of abuse. The study also found that most domestic abuse cases start with a subtle form of financial abuse and then escalate into physical violence or verbal, emotional or sexual abuse. Why do most people miss the warning signs or the overt ways that their abuser controls them and creates financial dependency? One main reason is that education around this kind of abuse is not as publicized or shared as other forms of abuse.
