Senators unveil bill to close patent gap faced by women

Proposed legislation aimed at closing the gap that women and minorities face when procuring patent rights could direct the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to collect demographic data from applicants and make this public.
US Senators Thom Tillis, Mazie Hirono and US representatives Nydia Velázquez and Steve Stivers introduced the Inventor Diversity for Economic Advancement (IDEA) Act of 2021 on March 9.
The IDEA Act is cosponsored by Senators Chris Coons and Patrick Leahy. The same coalition of senators and US representatives first unveiled the IDEA Act in 2019.

To Close Gender Gap, Fight Pay Secrecy
Pay secrecy contributes to the gender pay gap, say researchers.
On average, women make 18% less than their male counterparts.
Over the last decade, more than a dozen states plus the District of Columbia have enacted legislation banning pay secrecy policies workplace rules that prohibit workers from discussing wages and salaries. The laws aim to eliminate a means by which employers can discriminate intentionally or not against women in the pay setting.
Idaho and Utah have seen stronger employment recovery, and they had roughly the same number of jobs as they did in February 2020.
The number of unemployed Americans who have been out of work for at least 27 weeks has been increasing over the past year.
More and more Americans have been unemployed for longer than just a few weeks during the pandemic.
Of the nearly 10 million Americans unemployed in February, 41.5%, or over 4 million Americans, were long-term unemployed. Gould said this rising number of long-term unemployment was devastating.
The millions of Americans still receiving extended unemployment benefits provided by the federal government s stimulus actions in the past year also highlight the unemployment situation.
